SD cards speak SPI in “SPI mode” with a 3.3 V I/O.

Level shifting on cheap modules is often resistive — borderline at 8 MHz. 4 GB FAT32 is safest. In the classroom, treat MicroSD Card SPI Module as a intermediate part using SPI.
