L298N is a dual H-bridge motor driver: it lets a microcontroller reverse and PWM two DC motors (or drive a bipolar stepper) without frying GPIO pins.
An H-bridge is four switches arranged like an H around the motor. Closing opposite pairs applies voltage forward or reverse; PWM on ENA/ENB sets average voltage (speed). Inductive kickback is clamped by diodes. L298 bipolar Darlingtons drop ~1.5–2 V — motors see less than battery voltage and the chip gets hot when stalled. Motor supply to VCC (screw terminal), logic 5 V as required. ENA/ENB PWM from MCU; IN1–IN4 set direction. For 2WD: Motor A left, Motor B right. Remove the 5 V regulator jumper when using >12 V motor packs so you do not back-feed the MCU rail incorrectly.
