Concept
Linear regulator drops excess voltage as heat: P = (Vin−Vout)×I.
A little theory
Dropout ~1 V. From 5 V to 3.3 V at 0.5 A ≈ 0.85 W heat — needs copper/heatsink. In the classroom, treat AMS1117 3.3V Regulator Module as a beginner part using DC barrel / pins.
